One person was critically injured in the collision. News 4 New York’s Lynda Baquero reports.

A half-dozen people were hurt in a wrong-way crash on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Westchester County early Monday, according to police.

Authorities responding to the crash site near exit 17/Lincoln Avenue in Rye Brook around 12:10 a.m. found the driver of the wrong-way vehicle badly hurt. That person, later identified by police as 75-year-old Joan Feinstein, was driving her Mercedes Benz when she slammed into a Dodge Durango carrying a family from New Haven.

Feinstein, of Rye Brook, and the family were taken Westchester Medical Center. Feinstein was said to have suffered serious injuries to her lower extremities, as well as internal injuries. Her condition was not immediately clear.

The injuries to the five family members in the other vehicle — a husband, wife, and three children ages 12,17 and 25 — were not considered to be life-threatening.

The northbound side of the highway remained closed for a time to assist in the investigation. It later reopened.

The circumstances of the collision remain under investigation. It was not immediately clear why the driver was going in the wrong direction.

While the crash occurred when there was light rain and fog in the area, Westchester County Police Chief James Luciano said "there appears to be adequate signage in the areas, on all exits and entrance to the Parkway, with 'do not enter, wrong way, turn around, go back.'"

Westchester County Executive George Latimer referred to a study he ordered on signage along the Bronx River Parkway, and whether there is also room for improvement along parts of the Hutchinson River Parkway.

"Working with the New York State transport transportation, we're going to encourage them to do a similar study and to make similar recommendations for additional signage," Latimer said.
