What to Know
- We're tracking the potential for accumulating snow potential Tuesday (1-3" for most with up to 5" possibly in a narrow band across the interior) -- and this time it looks like the air will stay cold for all of us
- New York City's Department of Sanitation has issued a Snow Alert for Tuesday and reminds property owners they are responsible for clearing their sidewalks
- Winter Weather Advisories are issued into Tuesday afternoon with a concern for possibly slippery road conditions and ice accumulations for the Tuesday morning commute
New York City is likely to break its snow-less streak at the start of the week as temperatures continue to plummet, triggering winter weather advisories for our area.
After dangerous snow squalls swept through over the weekend, Storm Team 4 meteorologists expect no relief from the sub-freezing cold for the majority of the 10-day forecast, and up to 3 inches of snow will likely blanket the entire northeast region by the time the storm moves out midday on Tuesday. Higher totals of 3 to 5 inches are possible in a narrow band through the interior north and west of New York City.
The next few days are going to necessitate hats, gloves and scarves, at a minimum.
School delays and closings
A number of school districts across the tri-state decided to delay the start of school Monday or close altogether. Jersey City Public Schools will be among those districts closed on Tuesday. See the full, updating list here.

While generally light snowfall, temps will be below freezing so everything sticks right away, including on roadways, and ice accumulations could cause dangerous travel conditions.
How much will it snow Tuesday?
Local
Commuters returning to work Tuesday morning could see the most impact, but overall travel interruptions should be minimal. Snow showers are expected to wrap up by early afternoon with a general 1-3 inches of snow expected. However, south and east of I-95 could see some mixing of rain and ice towards midday.

NYC Department of Sanitation issues Snow Alert
The New York City Department of Sanitation issued a Snow Alert starting at 6 p.m. Monday through 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Snow Alert declaration helps the department work with other city agency to clear the city's streets and bike lines.
The city is reminding property owners that they are responsible for clearing sidewalks of snow and cannot push snow into the street.
If the snow stops falling between:
- 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., property owners must clear sidewalks within 4 hours
- 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., property owners must clear sidewalks within 14 hours
- 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., property owners must clear sidewalks by 11 a.m.

The next period to watch the weather will be Friday. There is potential for another round of light snow accumulation at night into early Saturday. One certainty, though, is this will usher in another 2 days of sub-freezing highs and lows.
Signs point to a swing back to above-average temps in the middle of next week.
