Snow? In the forecast?

The rumors are true: there's a chance of seeing some flurries later this week, but not for everyone.

December marks the start of meteorological winter. And temperatures have wasted no time bringing the seasonal chill. Last week, highs were nearing 60 degrees. This week they’ll barely get out of the 30s.

Average high temperatures this time of year are in the upper 40s. But we’ll spent most of this week 5-10 degrees cooler than that, feeling much more like the middle of winter than the start of it.

For those in the NYC metro area, conditions stay mostly dry this week while our friends to the north and west continue to pile on the snow. Storm Team 4 says a quick-moving system aiming for the tri-state late Wednesday could shake things up, ever so slightly.

What does that mean for Wednesday's tree lighting at Rockefeller Center? Right now, it is expected to stay cloudy but dry, and very chilly through the evening.

By the time the ceremony kicks off at 8 p.m., temperatures will once again be in the 30s. If you plan on attending the event, make sure to bring the hat and scarf along with your winter coat, there’s going to be a festive chill in the air.

When the precipitation finally arrives overnight, it might not be cold enough for snow in the city. Those north and west could see some flurries out the window as they head to bed Wednesday night, but any precipitation that falls in the five boroughs will be liquid.

The snow that does manage to fall north and west will not add up to much. For most, the snow switches over to rain by morning, greatly hindering any potential for accumulation; expect less than an inch.

And for those getting all rain: less than half an inch area-wide.

Winds in the wake of the midweek system will likely push up to 30-40 mph for Thursday and Friday. The feels-like temperatures, meanwhile, could be down in the teens and 20s.

There are early indications of another chance for some rain and snow potential early next week. Storm Team 4 will keep monitoring what could come in the days ahead.
