Who does Team USA men's basketball play in the quarterfinals? What to know for 2024 Olympics
By Sanjesh Singh

Team USA’s men’s basketball continued their perfect record at the 2024 Paris Olympics, advancing toward the knockout round.
Team USA men's basketball is 3-0 in Paris.
The U.S. on Saturday dominated Puerto Rico 104-83 to round out a relatively straightforward pool. The team also easily triumphed over Serbia and South Sudan.
The U.S. had already confirmed its spot in the quarterfinals after the second win vs. South Sudan, but solidified its 1-through-8 seeding placement with the Puerto Rico victory.
So, just who will the U.S. play next? Here's its reward for being the top-ranked team across all groups:
The United States won 18 medals on Saturday, its highest single-day medal count in a century. The massive medal haul brought Team USA's total medal count for Paris to 61, higher than any other participating nation.
The U.S. also managed to reclaim its number-two spot for gold medals. After falling behind France (12) and Australia (12) yesterday, the U.S. (14) is back in second place behind China (16).

With dozens of medals up for the earning Saturday, Team USA turned up.
The U.S. walked away with 18 medals in total across all events, besting the previous single-day record of 13.
Among the notable winners, gymnasts Simone Biles and Jade Carey each added another medal to their overall totals; Katie Ledecky bested Australia's Ariarne Titmus to win the women's 800m event for a fourth straight Olympics; and on the track Sha'Carri Richardson and Melissa Jefferson took silver and bronze in the women's 100m.

The U.S. women's 3x3 basketball team has rattled off five straight wins.
After an 0-3 start, the U.S. won four straight in pool play to set up a play-in quarterfinal game versus sixth-placed China.
The U.S. then rolled past China 21-13 Saturday to reach the semifinals, where it will play second-placed Spain for a spot in the final.

US tennis doubles stars describe excitement, disappointment on coming in second

Team USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson takes silver and Melissa Jefferson bronze in women’s 100m upset.
Sha'Carri Richardson sprinted to silver at the 2024 Olympics on Saturday, earning her first medal of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The win is a redemption for the track and field star, who controversially missed the Tokyo Olympics following a suspension three years ago.
The 24-year-old was not allowed to compete in the Tokyo Olympics despite qualifying at the Track and Field trials due to a one-month suspension for testing positive for the active ingredient in marijuana.
She has since dominated in the 100m, winning gold at the 2023 world championships and clocking the top time at U.S. Olympic trials.
U.S. women's soccer will face Germany in semifinals, reigning gold medalist Canada out
By Sanjesh Singh
The U.S. women's national soccer team will meet Germany in the semifinals.
Reigning gold medalist Canada lost 0-0 (4-2 penalties) in their quarterfinal match versus Germany Saturday.
The U.S. already crushed Germany 4-1 in the group stage.
Kickoff time is slated for 12 a.m. ET, 9 a.m. PT on Tuesday, Aug. 6.
Jasmine Moore got her best jump in early.
On her second attempt, Moore jumped 14.67 in the women's triple jump, her best jump of the season. But would it be enough to reach the podium?
It was. Through 32 more jumps. Through a brief rain delay.
In the end, it was the third-best jump of the day, good for a bronze medal -- the first-ever triple jump medal by an American woman at the Olympics.
Dominica's Thea Lafond won the gold with a 15.02 jump, and Jamaica's Shanieka Ricketts took bronze with 14.87.
Katie Ledecky fends off Ariarne Titmus for 4th straight 800m gold, Paige Madden takes bronze
Team USA star Katie Ledecky beat out Australia's Ariarne Titmus to win the women's 800m event for a fourth straight Olympics. Ledecky posted a time of 8:11.04 to finish ahead of Titmus (8:12.29) and become just the sixth athlete to ever win nine Olympic golds.
American Paige Madden finished in 8:13.00 to take bronze for her second medal of the Paris Games and third overall.
Ledecky, now a 14-time Olympic medalist, joins Michael Phelps as the only swimmers to ever win four golds in the same event.
Team USA's Sha'Carri Richardson takes silver and Melissa Jefferson bronze in women's 100m upset
Reigning world champion Sha'Carri Richardson came in with a time of 10.87, behind Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia, who came in with a time of 10.72.
Track and field star Richardson was widely considered the favorite, where she is the reigning world champion.
Melissa Jefferson finished in the bronze with a time of 10.92
Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was an unexpected scratch from that semifinal heat, meaning the entire podium from the last Olympic 100, including Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah, was not in the final this time.

How USA Rugby executed the shocking last-second try to win Olympic bronze
By Seth Rubinroit
Three-time Olympian Alev Kelter explains the emotional rollercoaster her teammates experienced as Alex Sedrick scored a last-second try to win Olympic bronze for the U.S. in Paris.
She made the comments on the “Finding Mastery” podcast with Dr. Michael Gervais and five-time Olympic medalist Nastia Liukin.

Five-time Olympic gymnastics medalist Nastia Liukin considered Kobe Bryant to be one of her “biggest mentors.”
“He would say, ‘Perfect balance — unless you’re on the balance beam — is almost possible,’” Liukin remembered on the “Finding Mastery” podcast.
Here is Bryant’s advice on achieving balance in life:

Team USA's Douglass takes silver in women's 200m individual medley; Walsh disqualified
Canada's Summer McIntosh won gold Saturday in the women's 200m individual medley.
Team USA's Kate Douglass took silver, while Australia's Kaylee McKeown earned bronze.
Team USA's Alex Walsh was third to the wall but was disqualified for an illegal turn from backstroke to breaststroke.
The Netherlands came back to stun Team USA in the 4x400m mixed relay final Saturday.
Shamier Little helped create a significant gap for the U.S. in the second exchange, while Kaylyn Brown had the lead entering the final lap.
However, Femke Bol rode big strides to leap Brown at the final gasp to win gold. The U.S. settled for silver while Great Britain took bronze.
Team USA previously set the Olympic record in heat one on Friday at 3:07.41.
Ryan Crouser secures historic shot put three-peat, Joe Kovacs wins silver again
By Eric Mullin
American Ryan Crouser became the first man to capture three straight Olympic shot put titles. The world-record holder, who's battled elbow and pectoral injuries this year, won gold with a throw of 22.90 meters on his third attempt.
Team USA's Joe Kovacs, meanwhile, won a third straight silver medal in dramatic fashion. Kovacs was sitting outside of a medal spot before unleashing a throw of 22.15m on his sixth and final attempt amid rainy conditions at Stade de France.
Jamaica's Rajindra Campbell also had a throw of 22.15m, but Kovacs had the better second-best throw (21.71m to 20.00m) to take silver over Campbell.
American Payton Otterdahl (22.03m) was knocked out of a medal spot following Kovacs' final throw, dropping from third to fourth.

Team USA boxer Jahmal Harvey was eliminated in the 57kg quarterfinals Saturday.
Harvey matched up against Kyrgyzstan's Munarbek Seittbek Uulu, falling 3-2 by decision.
The 21-year-old Maryland native won gold at the 2021 Belgrade World Championship and the 2023 Santiago Pan American Games.
Hungary's Kristof Milak captured gold in the men's 100m butterfly with a time of 49.40 seconds. Milak, who won silver in the 100m butterfly earlier in the Games, now owns four Olympic medals.
Canada made up the final two podium spots with Joshua Liendo taking silver (49.99) and Ilya Kharun taking bronze (50.45).
U.S. reigning Olympic champion Caeleb Dressel failed to qualify for the final.
Sha'Carri Richardson overcame a slow start Saturday to qualify for the Olympic 100-meter final later that night despite finishing second to Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia.
In a race featuring the two fastest Olympians in the field this year, Alfred finished in 10.84 seconds, a full body length and .05 seconds ahead of the reigning world champion.
Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was an unexpected scratch from that semifinal heat, meaning the two-time Olympic champion will not race for a third gold medal in the event. No reason was immediately given for her scratch.
Richardson and Alfred came in as the only two in the Olympic field to crack 10.8 seconds this year.
In the final, Richardson will go against her training partners, Melissa Jefferson and Twanisha Terry, along with Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith, who is the eighth-fastest woman of all time.
Eight-time medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce scratched from women's 100m semis
By Eric Mullin
Eight-time Olympic medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica was listed as a DNS on the start list for the women's 100m semifinals. It wasn't immediately clear why Fraser-Pryce was scratched from the race.
The 37-year-old was looking to medal in the 100m for a fifth straight Games. Fraser-Pryce, who's said this would be her final Olympics, won gold in 2008 and 2012, bronze in 2016 and silver in 2020.
Fraser-Pryce was viewed as one of the top competitors in American Sha'Carri Richardson's bid for gold.

After a slow start, the U.S. women's 3x3 team is on a roll.
The women beat China in the final game of pool play, 14-12, to clinch a spot in the next round.
Now they need to do it again.
The win was the fourth in a row for America, and moved Team USA up to third place in the pool play standings. It's a surprising turnaround, after losing the first three games of the tournament and appearing to head for an early exit.
Hailey Van Lith led the effort against China, with six points and two rebounds. Dearica Hamby added four points and five rebounds.

US women's, men's 3×3 basketball squads playing final pool games
By Sanjesh Singh
The U.S. women's and men's 3x3 basketball teams both stayed alive in their respective pools Friday.
The two squads looked headed for stunning early exits before going a combined 4-0. Now, both can secure play-in spots to push for a semifinal berth if they win their last games Saturday.
If either team loses, its qualification status would depend on other results around the pool. The top two teams progress straight to the semis while teams 3-to-6 compete in play-in games.
The U.S. women's team, in fourth, will play seventh-place China. The fifth-placed men's team will battle third-place Netherlands.

‘He did it again!' Social media erupts for Nedoroscik's 2nd bronze
By Asher Klein and Bianca Beltrán

American gymnast and social media phenom Stephen Nedoroscik seemed to have the whole country watching Saturday as he secured a second bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.
The Worcester, Massachusetts, native and pommel horse specialist had already gotten more than his fair share of nicknames after anchoring Team USA to the first men's team medal at the Olympics in 16 years. And after his 15.300 score in the pommel horse event final proved enough, Nedoroscik even appeared to acknowledge one of those nicknames — Clark Kent, for his signature glasses — by putting the American flag on like a cape.
Nedoroscik was also known as "pommel horse guy," which was instantly trending on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
"He did it again!" tweeted the City of Worcester, along with a message of congratulations and pride.

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif clinches medal at Paris Olympics after gender outcry
By Greg Beacham | The Associated Press

Boxer Imane Khelif of Algeria clinched a medal Saturday at the Paris Olympics following days of sharp scrutiny and online abuse as misconceptions about her gender have exploded into a larger clash about identity in sports.
Khelif defeated Anna Luca Hamori of Hungary 5:0 in the quarterfinals of the women’s 66-kilogram bout.
Khelif will win at least a bronze medal after defeating Hamori for the second victory of her tumultuous second trip to the Olympics.
Khelif faced international scrutiny after the banned International Boxing Association claimed Khelif failed an unspecified eligibility test for women’s competition last year. She then won her opening bout Thursday when opponent Angela Carini of Italy tearfully abandoned the fight after just 46 seconds.

Kevin Durant just a few points away from breaking USA Olympic record
By Mike Gavin

Kevin Durant is a few buckets away from making Olympic history.
The Phoenix Suns star, who already has the most points in the history of the U.S. men's basketball team, entered Saturday's game needing 17 points to pass women's star Lisa Leslie as the leading scorer in U.S. Olympic basketball history.
Durant scored eight points in the first half against Puerto Rico, going 3 of 5 from the field. That puts him at 480 career points in the Olympics, which is nine away from breaking Leslie's total of 488.
Leslie, a four-time Olympian, won gold medals with the U.S. women’s team in 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008. Durant is attempting to win a fourth gold medal, which would break a tie with Carmelo Anthony for the most in men's basketball history.

US men's basketball takes lead over Puerto Rico with dominant second quarter

Puerto Rico regained the lead on a layup for a one-point advantage before the U.S. responded with an 8-0 run for a 44-37 lead. After Puerto Rico got back within three, the U.S. blew the game open, closing the quarter on a 20-4 run to end a 39-point quarter.

Puerto Rico, which is 0-2, shot 54.5% from the field in the quarter, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range. The U.S. trailed by as many as eight at 25-17 after an 11-0 Puerto Rico run.
New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado led Puerto Rico with nine points. Jayson Tatum and Anthony Edwards had six points each for the U.S., which shot 57.1% in the quarter, going just 1 of 4 from deep.

Simone Biles delivers stunning vaults to win 7th Olympic gold medal
By Staff and AP

Simone Biles earned her seventh Olympic gold medal by soaring to victory in the women's vault final at the Paris Games on Saturday.
With her signature Biles II vault, Simone Biles earned the higher score of two. The element, also known as the Yurchenko double pike, is not only very dangerous and super difficult to land, but is the same move that beset Biles with a sudden case of the "twisties" during the Tokyo Olympics. The affliction forced her to withdraw from most of her events that summer, including the vault final.
On Saturday, eight years after she triumphed in Rio de Janeiro, the most decorated American gymnast claimed her second gold in the event.
Biles is the second woman to win vault twice, joining Vera Casalavska of Czechoslovakia as a two-time gold medalist on the vault. Casalavska went back to back in 1964 and 1968. Biles now has 10 Olympic medals in her career, tied for the third most by a female gymnast. She also boosted her medal count at major international competitions to 40, the most by any gymnast. Saturday's gold is her third medal of the Paris Games.
Team USA's Trinity Rodman scored with a beautiful left-footed strike in the first period of extra time Saturday to give the Americans a 1-0 lead over Japan in their quarterfinal matchup.
The winner of this game will play in a semifinal on Tuesday.

By Mike Gavin

In Team USA’s first game against Serbia, the starting lineup was Booker, Curry, James, Embiid and Jrue Holiday. In their second matchup against South Sudan, Kerr went with Booker, Curry, James, Tatum and Anthony Davis.
Kerr said his original plan for Saturday's game was to return to the starting lineup from the team's opening game. Holiday, however, is reportedly out with an ankle injury and was replaced by Tatum.
Jade Carey won’t defend the floor exercise gold medal she won three years ago in Tokyo, but she is in the vault final this afternoon.
Carey is the second American gymnast competing among the eight top vaulters, along with Simone Biles.
The 24-year-old earned a spot in final following a third-place finish behind Biles and Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade. Carey made the vault final in Tokyo, finishing eighth.
Simone Biles crushes her two vaults and leads the competition with a score of 15.300

With her signature Biles II vault, Simone Biles secured her place on the podium with a score of 15.700.
That element, also known as the Yurchenko double pike, is a super difficult and very dangerous.

USWNT-Japan tied 0-0 at end of regulation. Here's what happens now

The U.S. and Japan were tied 0-0 after regulation time Saturday in their women's soccer quarterfinal.
Here's what happens now:
Games may end in a draw in the group stage, but in the knockout round, a match tied at the end of regulation time goes into extra time, which consists of two 15-minute periods.
There is no "sudden death" in soccer, either in the form of a "golden goal" (first goal) or "silver goal" (leader at the end of the first overtime period).
If the score is still tied after extra time in a knockout game. The match goes to a penalty shootout and a coin toss decides which team shoots first.
Kevin Durant looking to pass Lisa Leslie as US Olympic all-time leading scorer
By Mike Gavin
Kevin Durant has a chance to rewrite the Olympic history books on Saturday.
The Phoenix Suns star, who already has the most points in the history of the U.S. men's basketball team, can pass women's star Lisa Leslie to become the leading scorer in U.S. Olympic basketball history.
Durant enters Saturday's game against Puerto Rico with 472 points in his Olympic career, which is 16 shy of matching Leslie's total of 488. Leslie, a four-time Olympian, won gold medals with the U.S. women’s team in 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008. Durant is attempting to win a fourth gold medal, which would break a tie with Carmelo Anthony for the most in men's basketball history.
Durant, while coming off the bench in Team USA's first two games in Paris, is the team's leading scorer at 18.5 points per game. He is shooting 71.4 percent from the field and is yet to miss from 3-point range, hitting all seven of his attempts.
Simone Biles debuts a new all-red leotard for the artistic gymnastics vault finals.

Team USA’s Omari Jones advanced to the 71kg boxing semifinals on Saturday.
Jones took down Bulgria’s Rami Mofid Kiwan 5-0.
His next opponent is still to be determined but the showdown will take place on August 6 for a spot in the final.
See more pictures from the eighth day of competition in Paris.

Simone Biles has had five skills named after her in the Code of Points after completing them in competition. Two of those are in the vault, the upcoming event in which she's seeking a seventh Olympic gold medal and 10th overall.
Biles I (vault version)
As with a lot of gymnastics elements, Biles took a Cheng vault and added another layer of difficulty — this one an extra half twist on a vault originally done by China’s Cheng Fei. The vault requires Biles to do a round-off onto the vault, then a half-twist onto the table before doing two full twists.
Biles II (vault version)
The Yurchenko double pike had never been completed by a woman in competition, and few men have even tried. Biles began tinkering with it in 2021 and it has morphed into her most show-stopping element. The vault asks Biles to do a round-off back handspring onto the table, then two backward flips in pike position with her hands essentially clasped to her knees. She does it with so much power, she can sometimes overcook it. At the U.S. Olympic trials last month, it drew a standing ovation.
Of course it had to end like this. The men's skeet final came down to two Americans, the teacher and the student.
Three-time gold medalist Vincent Hancock, 35, and Conner Lynn Prince, a 24-year-old first-time Olympian that Hancock has coached, went head-to-head for the gold medal.
Prince and Hancock entered the final 10 targets tied at 48. Then they each hit their next six shots. But on the final four, Prince faltered -- and Hancock capitalized.

What is the bell rung by rugby and track athletes after winning at Paris Olympics?
By Stephanie De Lancey | NBC Olympics

Players and coaches of the U.S. women’s rugby team pose for a photo with the bell following their bronze medal win.
The Stade de France has transformed from a rugby stadium into the home of all the track and field events at the Olympics. One thing that remained the same for the very different sports and their respective setups — the large bell at the one end of the field.
The bell is part of the refurbishment of the famous Notre Dame Cathedral. It is engraved with the Paris 2024 emblem and will be suspended in one of the cathedral’s bell towers after the Games. It is part of the legacy project for the Games, with the idea that the sound of Olympic victory will be heard for decades to come.
"In a way, Paris 2024 is helping to rebuild Notre-Dame. A part of the Games and the Olympic spirit will remain in Notre-Dame for life," confirms Pierre-André Lacout, a manager at the Stade de France.
During the rugby tournament, the bell became a photo staple with winners of each match. The French men rang the bell after they captured gold in the men’s tournament in front of the near-70,000 fans in attendance. The American women posed with the bell after their bronze medal win and had their own chance to make the bell chime.

Asked how these Olympics compare to the Tokyo Games, Lyles said he's glad fans are back in the stands. The constant showman thrives on the cheers of spectators and admitted he was struggling with depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. He won a bronze in the 200m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
