Who do the Yankees play in ALDS? MLB Division Series matchups, schedule, how to watch

Both ALDS matchups are set.

NBC Universal, Inc. Three out of four World Series teams have came out of the Wild Card round since the MLB expanded its postseason format in 2022. This year’s playoffs promises to test this possible baseball trend.

The Division Series in the 2024 MLB playoffs is nearly set, and the top-seeded Yankees now know who they will be playing in the best-of-five series.

New York, who earned the No. 1 seed in the American League after finishing with a league best 94 wins in the regular season, will be playing host to the Kansas City Royals. The No. 5 team completed a two-game sweep of the no. 4 Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Wednesday behind strong pitching (allowing just one run in two games) and just enough timely hitting.

Also in the American League, the No. 6 Detroit Tigers advanced past the Wild Card Series in a two-game sweep as well, stunning the No. 3 Houston Astros on the road. The Astros had reached the American League Championship Series in seven straight years before their surprising earlier ouster on Wednesday.

The Tigers will head to Cleveland to play the Guardians.

On the National League side, the No. 1 Los Angeles Dodgers and No. 2 Philadelphia Phillies, are waiting to see who they will be playing.

Kansas City and Detroit now head to the Division Series where the American League's No. 1 New York Yankees and No. 2 Cleveland Guardians, along with the National League's No. 1 Los Angeles Dodgers and No. 2 Philadelphia Phillies, are waiting.

From the matchups to the schedule and more, here's what we know about the ALDS and NLDS so far:

Does MLB reseed in the playoffs?

If you're wondering why the top-seeded Yankees are playing the No. 5 Royals instead of the No. 6 Tigers, it's because the MLB playoffs follow a bracket format and don't reseed teams following the opening round.
