Winless Argentina no match for Italy

The Italian women's volleyball team on Thursday remained unbeaten at the Tokyo Olympics, looking progressively stronger throughout a 3-0 sweep of winless Argentina in Pool B action at Ariake Arena.

Argentina made it more than competitive in the first set before succumbing 25-21, and Italy responded to the challenge by methodically closing things out, 25-16 and 25-15, to improve to 3-0 in the pool. Argentina fell to 0-3.

Dominican Republic tests South Korea

South Korea improved to 2-1 in Pool A, but not without being pressed into a fifth and final set by winless Dominican Republic.

Whenever it looked like South Korea had taken control, starting with a 25-20 first set, the Dominicans answered, swapping set victories before running out of steam in the fifth, ultimately falling 15-12 to fall to 0-3 in pool play.

Serbia keeps Kenya winless

MATCH STATS

Serbia improved to 3-0 in Pool A action by making quick work of its gritty African opponent, 25-21, 25-21 and 25-20.

Kenya fell to 0-3. 

Russian Olympic Committee hands China its third straight loss

MATCH STATS

Reigning champion China seemed to find its rhythm during a match against the Russian Olympic Committee, but the team couldn't close out the match to claim its first win of the Tokyo Games.

After losing in straight sets to both Turkey and the United States, China pushed the ROC  to five sets and won two consecutively but ultimately lost, 17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-27, 12-15. The ROC improves to 2-1 in pool play. 

Brazil breezes by Japan

MATCH STATS

Brazil defeated Japan in straight sets to remain undefeated in pool play. The home team put up a fight in the third set but couldn't keep up as Brazil won 25-16, 25-18. 26-24.

The loss marks the second time Japan has been shutout in the 2020 Olympics after the team lost 3-0 to Serbia.
