Man Drives Into Sinkhole After Heavy Rain Swallows Road

A North Carolina man is recovering after mistakenly driving into a massive sinkhole Sunday night. The sinkhole formed after a heavy storm broke a pipe, and when Robert Belcher saw water on the road, he assumed it was just a puddle. “It was no puddle, but I didn’t know that until I was in it. My truck had already went down and started flipping,” Belcher said. Unable to open his car door, Belcher worked to break out the front windshield, punching it until it finally broke. He was able to escape, holding onto a tree limb until EMS crews pulled him to safety.
