Emergency crews recovered the bodies of a woman and her 9-month-old son early Tuesday from a car submerged in a New Jersey pond.

A passerby saw the car in the waters of New Market Pond near Stelton Road and Lakeview Avenue in Piscataway around dawn, though authorities are not sure how long it had been there.

The woman was identified by the Middlesex County prosecutor's office as 30-year-old Tamequa Robinson, of Edison. Her infant son's name has not yet been shared, but the prosecutor's office confirmed the child was the other individual in the car. It was not clear what caused the car to go into the water.

Law enforcement sources say the child was strapped into a safety seat. The cause of death for both mother and child will be determined by the medical examiner pending autopsies.

The investigation is ongoing.
