Spring officially kicks off Tuesday and the tri-state enjoyed another day of record or near-record warmth on the last official day of winter.
Monday marked the last winter day and the area saw mostly sunny skies with high temperatures in the 70s throughout most of the area. Newark broke a record with 77 degrees, LaGuardia broke a record with 72 and Bridgeport, Conn. had a record-breaking 68.
Spring officially kicks off Tuesday at 1:14 a.m., and the high is expected at about 69 degrees. The forecast turns even brighter for the rest of the week as high pressure centered off the coast maintains a southerly flow of very warm air.
Meteorologists expect a high of 71 degrees on Wednesday and possible record highs on Thursday, when temperatures are expected to reach the high 70s and even low 80s across the area.
The weather turns cooler by the weekend with highs in the low 60s and a chance of showers.
Record high temperatures were reported across upstate New York on Sunday. It reached 80 in Syracuse, 78 in Rochester, 75 in Buffalo and 74 in Watertown and Binghamton. Albany was cooler, but its 66 degrees still set a record, beating the old record of 65 set in 1966.
