Eight people were wounded in a drive-by shooting in Paterson, N.J. late Tuesday night when someone fired a gun at a group of people outside a home on Governor Street.
Four men and four women who had been standing outside were shot. One of the men was critically wounded and remains hospitalized at St. Joseph's Hospital, according to Detective Lt. Richard Reyes said.
The other seven victims were treated and released.
Police officers who responded to the shootout described a chaotic scene.
Officer Frank Rendina said he was flagged down by a passerby seconds after the shooting and directed to the Governor Street address, where he found a man with multiple gunshot wounds.
Rendina called for backup and the paramedics. Then more shooting victims started showing up, he said.
Authorities are investigating whether the incident was gang-related and if the victims were targeted. They are also seeking a description of the vehicle involved in the drive-by shooting.
