The shooting happened in the vicinity of Mercer and Howard streets around 3:30 p.m., according to police.
One man was found shot dead in a courtyard, and another man was found dead in a car, police said. A third person was injured.
Police on Sunday identified the men as Jasson Duffy, 30, of Newark, and Hassan Ward, 30, also of Newark.
The third victim, a female whose age wasn't released, was in critical but stable condition, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said she appears to have been hit by a stray bullet and was not the target.
