A former boxer has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for stabbing and bludgeoning to death his ex-girlfriend on a street in Queens.
Prosecutors say 31-year-old Trevis Hall was sentenced Thursday after being convicted of murder and criminal possession of a weapon in the Dec. 1, 2014 death of Margarita Rivera.
"Breaking up with someone should not equal a death sentence, but in a violent rage this defendant carried out a brutal execution of his former lover," Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said in a statement, adding that "the sentence imposed by the court today is more than warranted."
Hall was a former featherweight boxer and Golden Gloves winner known in boxing circles as "Black Mama."
Prosecutors said during the trial that he used a knife and a pipe that he had just purchased at The Home Depot to attack the 31-year-old victim on Watson Place in Jamaica.
Responding officers found her in a pool of her own blood and asked who had hurt her, but she was only able to say "Tre," three times. She later died at a Queens hospital.

Hall was found unconscious in a dumpster following a suicide attempt later that day. Prosecutors said he had a receipt for the pipe he used in her death in his pocket.
His lawyer, Steven Silberblatt, said the crime was not premeditated and that there were serious errors in the case. He said they plan to appeal.
