Teen Killed, Another Hurt in Lower East Side Shooting: Police

NBC Universal, Inc.

Isiah Levine became the ninth young person gunned down in New York City since the start of October. NBC New York’s Adam Harding reports.

A teenager was killed and another was hurt after a shooting at a Manhattan street corner Friday evening, police said.

The gunfire broke out around 8:30 p.m. near the corner of Delancey Street and Suffolk Street on the Lower East Side, according to police. A 16-year-old boy, identified by police as Isiah Levine, was struck in the face by a bullet.

He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released, pending family notification.

Another male, believed to be a teen, was also shot, police said. That second teen took himself to the hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the hip, and is expected to survive. A Citibike was left on its side at the scene, just feet away from at least four bullet casings noted by evidence markers.

Both victims were with a large group of people when the shooter approached them and opened fire, a senior NYPD official with direct knowledge of the incident told NBC New York.

The surrounding sidewalks were filled with many bystanders enjoying the evening, many fleeing into the Essex Market or nearby movie theater when the gunfire went off.

"We just heard five pops. Very loud so we knew it was on this block," one witness said. "Some of the people that were close to the theater were frightened and ran into the theater."

No arrests have been made, and an investigation is ongoing.
