Animal rescuers are desperately trying to help a starving pit bull found thrown down a garbage chute in a Newark, N.J., apartment building.
His rescuers named him Patrick after resuscitating him on March 16.
The Associated Humane Societies/Popcorn Park reports Patrick was found stuffed in a trash bag in a garbage bin in the basement of a 22-story Newark apartment building on March 16.
A maintenance worker saw the bag moving, opened it up, and discovered the dog, "almost skeletal and clinging to life," according to Bruce Sanchez, Manager of AHS in Tinton Falls.
He called Newark's Animal Control and Officer Arthur Skinner took him to Associated Humane Societies Newark Animal Care Center.
There, the dog was put on intravenous fluid after his temperature "was so low that it did not even register on the thermometer," said Sanchez.
After being covered with heating pads and blankets, he was taken by ambulance to Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls, which is a 24-hour emergency care animal hospital, according to the release.

There, the pit bull was given a blood transfusion, a bath "and even a walk and is recovering well."
"In honor of the first day of his re-birth, we called him Patrick, in honor of St. Patrick's Day," Roseann Trezza, AHS/Popcorn Park Executive Director, said in a statement.
A $2,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person who threw Patrick down the garbage chute.
