Track Fire Disrupts L Train Subway Service

The L train was suspended Thursday morning due to a track fire, officials said.

There were reports of smoky conditions in the tunnel between Bedford and 1st Avenues at 9:17 a.m., the MTA said. After further investigation, officials determined that the smoke came from a manhole near 14th Street and Avenue D.

Shortly before 11 a.m., the FDNY reported the manhole fire was under control.

Service was suspended between Bedford Avenue and Eighth Avenue, the MTA said.

Photos on Twitter showed firefighters inside the subway station and firetrucks parked outside the Bedford stop in Brooklyn.

The MTA advised commuters to take the A, C or J trains at Broadway Junction. As an alternative, straphangers can also take the B62 bus to the following stations for service:

  • Jay Street-Metrotech for A, C, F, or R train service
  • Court Square for E, M, or 7 train service
  • Nassau Avenue for G train service
  • Marcy Avenue for J and M train service
Commuters can also transfer between the L and the M trains at Myrtle Avenue for service to Manhattan. For service from Lorimer Street, passengers should take the G train. Commuters should allow for extra travel time.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
