6 Kids Among Injured in School Bus Crash in Brooklyn: FDNY

Six children and one adult were injured when a mini school bus crashed with another vehicle and overturned in Brooklyn on Friday, according to fire officials. Michael George reports.

Six children and one adult were injured when a mini school bus crashed with another vehicle and overturned in Brooklyn on Friday, according to fire officials.

The bus was traveling northbound on Fourth Avenue in Park Slope around 3 p.m. when it tried to make a left turn onto First Street and was broadsided by a Mustang, fire officials said. The impact flipped the bus onto its side.

Video obtained exclusively by NBC 4 New York shows a white truck pulling into the busy intersection when the school bus pulls up alongside it, then crosses in front of it to turn into the intersection. The Mustang driver apparently doesn't see the bus until it's too late.

"The Mustang sped right into it," said witness Marilyn Herrera.

Six children suffered minor injuries; the adult was taken to a hospital in serious but stable condition, according to fire officials.

"They were shaken up, kind of traumatized," Herrera said of the children. "One was holding his head, so I made him lay down and make sure he was OK."

The ages of the children were unclear; Herrera said they looked to be about 12 or so.

Neighbors say the intersection has become dangerous, nearly feeling like a highway. Multiple complaints have been posted to the city's Vision Zero website about the crossing, and the injury accident there was the third one in the last five weeks.

Community board member Joanna Oltman Smith worries the next one could be fatal.

"It's basically just a backwater highway that people feel free to drive on as fast as they want to," she said. "This is why we need more speed cameras. We need them urgently."

Police are still reviewing surveillance video and investigating the crash. It's unclear if the bus driver will be ticketed for making the turn.
