Parts of New York City, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut saw the coldest Nov. 19 on record as an arctic snap continued to freeze the entire region Wednesday.
In Central Park, the temperature reached only 33 degrees. That broke a record for the the lowest daytime high on this date since 1882.
Record low daytime high temps were also set at JFK airport (33 degrees), Long Island's MacAurthur Airport (34 degrees) Newark airport (33 degrees) and LaGuardia airport (33 degrees).
Early Wednesday morning, record low temperatures were also recorded at LaGuardia and JFK airports, in Islip on Long Island and in Bridgeport, Connecticut, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures in each location dipped into the low 20s, shattering previous records for the date.
The January-like conditions come amid a nationwide plunge in temperatures that made for record-breaking cold across the country. The cold weather is also being blamed for creating the lake-effect snow system that is pummeling Buffalo and other parts of Western New York with several feet of snow.
Luckily, tri-state residents won’t have to wait much longer for things to thaw out as temperatures rebound into the 40s on Thursday. Temperatures will take another dip into the 30s on Friday before climbing back into the 40s again on Saturday.
Highs will then jump to the 50s Sunday as clouds begin to cover the sky, and a rainy day Monday with temperatures in the 60s will set the stage for a seasonable Thanksgiving week.
