Taxi Bursts into Flames at Queensboro Plaza

A taxi cab burst into flames at Queensboro Plaza Friday evening, causing some delays on the subway and vehicle traffic near the Queensboro Bridge.

A taxi cab burst into flames at Queensboro Plaza during rush hour Friday evening, causing some delays on the subway and vehicle traffic near the Queensboro Bridge. 

Firefighters quickly knocked out the fire, but the initial flames and thick black smoke that emanated from the blaze startled people in the area. 

"7 train Queensboro Plaza stations is REALLY smoky," tweeted one subway rider.

Others stuck on the N, R or 7 trains near the Queensboro Plaza stop tweeted about being stuck on the stopped trains as the FDNY responded.

The MTA said service has resumed on the subway lines. 

Photos from the scene show a charred, gutted taxi cab.

The FDNY said only the driver was in the car at the time of the explosion, and he was able to jump out safely. No one was injured.

It's not clear what caused the explosion.
