11 Firefighters Injured in Blaze at Queens Grocery Store: FDNY

A fire that broke out at a grocery store in Glendale, Queens, injured 12 people, including 11 firefighters, officials said. Rana Novini reports.

A five-alarm fire erupted at a grocery store in Queens on Saturday evening, authorities said, injuring 11 firefighters. 

The fire broke out after 9 p.m. at a Farmer's Market grocery store at on Myrtle Avenue in Glendale, FDNY said. It was not immediately clear how many people were displaced from the apartments above the store. 

It took about four hours to get the fire under control. 

A battalion chief said firefighters initially had trouble with two fire hydrants that weren't working properly. 

By early Sunday morning, FDNY reported a total of 12 injuries, all but one firefighters. Of them, nine were considered minor and two serious, though none life-threatening. 

One injured civilian refused treatment at the scene. 

A woman who lives above the store was devastated by the fire. She said she and her family weren't home when the flames broke out.
