8-year-old killed, brother hurt after truck hits them in Queens crosswalk: Police

NBC Universal, Inc.

Two young brothers were hit by a truck as they were crossing a Queens street with their mother, leaving the 8-year-old dead and his older brother injured.

The two boys were hit around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday while they were crossing the street at the intersection of 100th Street and 31st Avenue in East Elmhurst with their mother, according to a law enforcement source. The three had the light and were making their way in the crosswalk when A 2005 dark-colored Nissan Titan pickup truck was making a left turn onto 100th Street when it barreled into them.

The younger boy was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The older brother, 10 years old, was taken to New York-Presbyterian with minor injuries and is expected to survive. Their 37-year-old mother was not hurt in the incident.

A woman who saw it all happen described the tragic scene, with the mother left yelling out "you hit my boy." The other brother was left frozen in shock.

Police said they don't believe the driver of the pickup, later identified as Jose Barcia, ever saw the family crossing the street. They did not say whether he may have been distracted behind the wheel.

The 52-year-old Barcia stayed at the scene. He was charged with criminally negligent homicide, failure to yield to a pedestrian, failure to exercise due care and speeding. Attorney information for Barcia was not immediately available.

An investigation is ongoing.
