A mother and her three young children were hit by a car in New Jersey Friday morning, critically injuring the mother and one of the children, authorities said.

According to police, the family was waiting to cross the street at the corner of Dewitt and Academy terraces in Linden at around 8:30 a.m., when a driver stopped and signaled to the mother to cross.

But just as the family stepped into the street, another vehicle behind the stopped car went around to pass that car and struck the mother and her children.

The impact threw the youngest child out of his stroller and onto the pavement, police said. Both the mother, identified as 34-year-old Jordan Spencer, and the infant were rushed to University Hospital with head injuries.

The two other children, ages 2 and 4, were not seriously injured, officials said.

"The other two kids seem to be OK at this time but mom and the youngest are in bad shape," said Linden Police Lt. Michael Babulski.

The 54-year-old driver who struck the family remained at the scene and was taken in for questioning by police. As of Friday afternoon, no charges had been filed against him.

Police said they were looking into whether glare from the sun was a factor in the accident.
