An 11-year-old boy is dead after subway surfing in Brooklyn, authorities say.
Authorities responding to a call near the 4th Avenue and 9th Street F/G station in Park Slope around 10:15 a.m. found the boy dead at the scene. It wasn't immediately clear how he fell, but it is believed he did so while subway surfing on the G train.
His identity wasn't clear.
Train service was severely impacted in the area. F trains were running with heavy delays and G train service was limited. Get the latest status updates from the MTA here.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a tweet that it was "heartbreaking to hear another life cut short due to subway surfing," and touted the city's program put in place to discourage children and adolescents from attempting the dangerous stunt.
Interim NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow said in a statement that the death was "another avoidable heart-wrenching reminder that riding outside trains is not a game and the subway is not a social media studio." The MTA has worked with social media companies to remove videos showing subway surfing.
