A man was found dead inside his ransacked home in Farmingville, and authorities are calling the death suspicious.
The body of the 53-year-old man was discovered around 8:30 p.m. Thursday by officers doing a wellness check with a friend of the victim, sources familiar with the investigation tell NBC 4 New York. The friend had a key and let the officers into the home. Once inside, they made the grisly find.
The man's body lay in a pool of blood and he had suffered traumatic injuries to his head, sources said, adding he may have been shot or beaten to death.
The home sits at the end of Iroquois Avenue, a heavily wooded street. The sources said it appeared the man had been dead for a day or so before he was discovered, though decomposition had not yet set in.
The house had been ransacked, according to sources, and authorities said the death is suspicious.
"We do believe foul play," Suffolk County Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer said.
The man, who has not been identified, lived alone at the home, according to sources. An autopsy will be performed to determine how he died.

Investigators were still combing for clues on the dead-end street before dawn Friday. A mobile command center was set up and crime scene tape blocked off the area.
