Cop Found Shot to Death in New Jersey: Officials

Sources say that the man was a 9-year veteran of the force

An off-duty New Jersey police officer was found shot to death near a closed movie theater on Monday morning, authorities say.

The body of a male Sayreville officer was found behind his personal vehicle parked outside the former Amboy Cinemas off the Garden State Parkway in Sayreville at about 7:15 a.m., authorities say. One of the vehicle's windows appeared to have been shot out.

Sources say that the man was a 9-year veteran of the force. His identity hasn't been released yet.

Authorities wouldn't say what led to the fatal shooting.

No alert has been put out for a gunman, sources tell NBC 4 New York.

An autopsy will be performed on the officer's body, authorities said. Officials said the man appears to have suffered at least one gunshot wound.

The Middlesex County prosecutor and the Sayreville Police Department were investigating the shooting.
