There were heavy delays on the New York State Thruway Wednesday morning after a tractor-trailer carrying bottles of water crashed into a disabled vehicle and burst into flames, in Rockland County, state police say.
The tractor-trailer was hauling 5-gallon plastic bottles north on Interstate 87 when it slammed into the vehicel between exits 10 and 11, underneath the Franklin Street overpass in Nyack, troopers say.
Chopper 4 footage from the scene shows white smoke emanating from the remnants of the destroyed truck, which is sitting just south of the overpass. Several fire trucks responded to the scene, and it appears that foam was used to smother the flames.
The driver at the wheel of the big rig had minor injuries, troopers say.
One lane on the northbound side reopened at about 7:30 a.m., but traffic remained backed up for several miles. At one point delays stretched into Westchester County. Heavy delays were also reported on the southbound side due to rubber-necking.
All lanes were reopened by about 10 a.m.
