NYC Communities to Create “Slow Zones”

The "slow zones" will be areas where driving speed is reduced from 30 to 20 mph.

New York City transportation officials are asking communities to tell them where drivers need to slow down in their neighborhoods.

The city Department of Transportation is accepting applications for ``slow zones'' where the speed would be reduced from 30 to 20 mph.

According to the agency's website, a zone will be a "self-enforcing, reduced-speed area.'' It will be denoted by speed bumps, markings and other "traffic calming treatments.''

Councilman James Oddo, who represents parts of Staten Island and Brooklyn, tells the Staten Island Advance on its website Friday that "the key is finding the right streets.''

He says people speed on Staten Island "just about every day on every street.''

Applications must be received by Feb. 3.
