At least one person was killed and several others were hurt in a gruesome, six-vehicle crash that forced state police to shut down Interstate 84's westbound lanes Wednesday as they toiled through the mangled metal on the highway.

Troopers said that two tractor-trailers and four vehicles crashed in the westbound lanes of the interstate near exit 5 in the Orange County town of Montgomery.

Police say two patients were sent to hospitals via helicopter with serious injuries, and a number of other people are being treated.

Chopper 4 captured several cars and at least one tractor-trailer piled up in the westbound lanes of the highway. Dozens of firefighters crowded around the roadway, and one badly mangled car is covered by a tarp.

Troopers said the lanes would be closed indefinitely.

The crash site is a few miles east of a multiple-vehicle crash that shut down I-84's westbound lanes for four hours Monday.
