Politics may have its ups and downs, but New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg can certainly say he's had a rewarding year in another way — financially.
Forbes estimates the businessman-turned-politician's fortune soared by $5 billion in the last year, to $27 billion. He's now 13th on the magazine's global list of billionaires, released Monday.
Forbes says Bloomberg's fortune got a boost from the performance of Bloomberg LP, the financial information firm he founded in 1982.
For his part, Bloomberg said Monday he doesn't like such lists.
The 71-year-old Bloomberg gives away a chunk of his money each year. In a recent example, he pledged $100 million last week to fight polio.
He's also a major political contributor. His causes include gun control.
He's in his last year in office.
