Man Steals Truck, Beats Elderly Man on Street: Police

A man who stole a truck from a car dealership, beat a 74-year-old man unconscious and walked into a gym to turn in the truck owner’s wallet was arrested Tuesday on Long Island, police said.

The 23-year-old man drove his 2001 Ford Taurus to a car dealership on South Broadway in Hicksville around 10 a.m., Nassau County police said.

The man allegedly parked his car and got into a 2013 Dodge pickup truck that was idling in front of the dealership. He then drove a block down the street, got out of the truck and began punching and kicking a 74-year-old man to the ground, knocking him unconscious, police said.

He got back into the car and kept driving south before stopping at Ultimate Gym on Bloomingdale Road. There, he turned in the truck owner’s wallet and left.

The gym contacted the truck’s owner and police found the man walking on Jerusalem Avenue near Constellation Road. The truck was found nearby on Albert Road.

He was arrested on assault and grand larceny charges, and taken to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

The 74-year-old victim was treated to a nearby hospital with cuts and bruises.
