Five people were hurt when a balcony collapsed at a beachside building on Long Island Monday night, officials said.
The second-floor deck collapsed onto the first floor of the Shore Road building in Long Beach at about 8:30 p.m., according to the Long Beach Fire Department.
The five people on the balcony when it collapsed were taken to the hospital in stable condition, according to officials. No one was hurt on the ground.
"It was just really loud," said resident Angelica Pinzon. "I was on my bed. My aunt heard people saying, 'help, help,' and we ran out and called 911."
Fire Commissioner Scott Kemins attributed the collapse to a "mixture of structural failure as well as the live load on the balcony -- five people, a barbecue, it was probably too much for the elderly balcony."
Kemins said while the building had some flooding damage from Sandy, the balcony was on the second floor and the collapse did not appear to be related to storm damage.
