The impact of a suicide attack thousands of miles away in Afghanistan is being felt right here in New York City with evidence of heavy security. The attack in Kabul ended in a fiery and deadly NATO raid and within moments police presence increased in Midtown. Ida Siegal reports.
The NYPD is increasing its counterterrorism coverage of New York City hotels at the height of the summer tourism season after bombers ambushed a hotel in Afghanistan.
NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said the response is a precaution and not as a result of any specific threat.
A vehicle blew out the front gate of the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul, while as many as six suicide bombers are believed to have entered the building, according to NBC News.
Early reports say as many as 10 people could have been killed in the attack that has evoked comparisons to the deadly 2008 hotel attack in Mumbai
Police say the occupants of the Kabul hotel were mainly Afghan governors from various provinces in town for a meeting on Wednesday.
