Long Island Prosecutor IDs 104 Alleged Johns

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice says the list includes two doctors, two dentists and several lawyers

Authorities on Long Island have released the names of 104 men suspected of propositioning prostitutes who turned out to be undercover police officers. Greg Cergol has the report.

Authorities on Long Island have released the names of 104 men suspected of propositioning prostitutes who turned out to be undercover police officers.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice says the men were arrested between April 18 and May 24 after responding to ads online.

Rice says the group of men includes two doctors, two dentists and several lawyers. She says they were caught on video offering money for sex to an undercover officer.

The arrests are an expansion of the way law enforcement typically goes after prostitution; johns are usually not arrested, and in fact, fewer than 40 have been arrested by police in Nassau County in the last 10 years.

All the defendants arrested in this sweep have pleaded not guilty to misdemeanors. Each faces up to one year in jail if convicted.

An attorney for some of those arrested says he's considering a court fight, even though the names have now been made public.

Brian Griffin successfully fought a 2008 initiative that publicized arrests of suspected drunken drivers. He is studying a similar challenge.
