A heated argument between two drivers ended with a driver dead and the other arrested after a violent car crash on Long Island, sent one of the vehicles into a building, officials say.

The crash happened just after midnight Tuesday morning in the area of Acacia Avenue and Baldwin Road in Hempstead, according to officials. A man inside a green car that split in half died. His identity has not yet been released, but family members at the scene tell News 4 he was a 22-year-old man.

The driver of the green car apparently lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a restaurant at the intersection. A second car was discovered a block away and may have crashed into parked cars before coming to a stop.

Police say the drivers, both in their 20s, knew each other and were arguing, then a chase took place, which ended with a crash.

The argument allegedly started in Valley Stream, then they started chasing each other. The high speed chase brought them to Hempstead. Police say the dark colored car struck the green car. The green car's driver lost control, struck a tree and slammed into a building. The crash killed him. His passenger, a 21-year-old woman suffered critical injuries and was rushed to a hospital.

Video from the scene shows the mangled green car as detectives put down evidence markers on the street.

The streets around the crash was shut down as police investigated.

The investigation is ongoing.
