A Brooklyn food importer is recalling a Chinese-made hard candy because it contains undeclared preservatives that could cause a life-threatening allergic reaction.
A&S Food Trading, Inc. issued the recall Tuesday of the Hua Zhi Ying brand gourd candy, which is sold in a clear plastic package. The importer says the candy contains 33.22 milligrams of sulfites per serving, but it is not labeled.
The consumption of 10 milligrams or more of sulfites could cause serious allergies.
The mislabeling was discovered after an inspection by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. Inspector Jamal Mohamed says most of the candy was seized but a small amount was sold.
No illnesses have been reported. Consumers who have purchased should return it to the place of purchase.
