A 10-year-old boy was arrested in summer school on Staten Island after he allegedly brought a gun to school and pointed it at classmates, authorities say.
A teacher saw the fourth-grader at P.S. 373 in New Dorp on Friday with a suspicious item, according to officials. It turned out to be a .45-caliber handgun with no serial numbers.
The child allegedly pointed the gun at two children before it was taken away.
Parents were told of the incident through a letter sent home by the Department of Education which read in part: "Appropriate disciplinary actions are being taken with the student involved. However, I want to reassure you that your child's instructional program was not interrupted."
Authorities said the boy gave a statement explaining where he had gotten the gun, but officials did not give details.
Parents at the school said the gun scare was frightening.
"Would I take him out of the school? Absolutely. Would I want answers? Absolutely," said Kim Kaufmann, a mother of a student at the school.
