5-Alarm Fire Tears Through Homes in New Jersey: Officials

A fire ripped through several homes on a block in Bayonne, New Jersey. Drew Wilder reports.

A five-alarm fire tore through several homes on a New Jersey block on Saturday, leaving 44 people homeless and trapping two firefighters, officials said.

The firefighters were able to use their hoses to free themselves from the smoke and flames, Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver said.

The fire broke out on Andrew Street, between Avenue C and John F. Kennedy Boulevard, in Bayonne, the city's Office of Emergency Management said. Six hours later, the fire still was burning.

Two civilians suffered minor injuries, Weaver said.

At least 44 people were permanently displaced, Weaver said.

The NJ Red Cross said it provided food, clothing and other emergency assistance to 16 families, or 46 people. About half of those received housing assistance.
