Baby Dead, 2 Adults Critical After Fire Erupts at Brooklyn Apartment Building: FDNY

The fire struck a 13-floor building in Brownsville

A 1-year-old boy died and two adults are fighting for their lives after a fire broke out at a 13-story housing project in Brooklyn Wednesday, officials say.

Fire officials say they were called to the building on Mother Gaston Boulevard, part of the Howard Houses complex in the Brownsville section of the borough, shortly before 9 a.m.

Ivan Baez and the two adults were initially taken to the hospital in critical condition; Baez later died. Four other adults were injured.

Eduardo Munoz said that the child's mother was among those injured in the blaze.

"The mother came down, she wasn't burnt but she was in bad shape," he said.

Chopper 4 captured an extensive emergency presence at the scene, with firefighters visible in several windows of the top floor.

The blaze didn't spread beyond the top floor, but several residents could be seen hanging out windows asking firefighters to rescue them.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
