Fire Breaks Out at Upper Manhattan Stores; 4 Firefighters Hurt

A fast-moving fire tore through a strip of businesses in Inwood Sunday morning, leaving many of them damaged beyond repair. Wale Aliyu reports.

A fire broke out in upper Manhattan on Sunday morning, damaging several stores and injuring four firefighters, officials said.

The blaze on Nagle Avenue in Inwood affected seven businesses, including at least one restaurant, in the single story business strip.

A fire official said the FDNY believes the fire began in the cockloft and spread quickly throughout all seven businesses. The official said the fire traveled quickly and it's hard to determine in which business it started.

Video of the scene showed flames leaping from the rooftop and firefighters unfurling hoses on the ground to battle the blaze.

Four firefighters suffered minor injuries. No civilians were hurt.

Most of the stores were left uninhabitable. Francisco Adames fought back tears as he looked at his grocery store, Food Plaza Market, which he has owned for the past 10 years.

"That's my life over there," Adames said. "I can't believe it."
