A fire broke out at an East Village apartment building Sunday morning, killing one person, police said.
A man, later identified as 71-year-old Barry Allen, was found dead in the building, police said. Two other people suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospitals.
The fire was reported in a six-story building on Seventh Street between avenues C and D shortly before 7:30 a.m., firefighters said.
The FDNY later said a candle was to blame for the fire and that there was no smoke alarm found in the apartment. A smoke alarm in the public hallway was not functioning, the department said.
