Three people died in a multi-vehicle crash in New Jersey that resulted from a wrong-way driver, a law enforcement source tells NBC New York.
Police responded to a crash just before 2 a.m. Friday on the eastbound side of Interstate 80 in Parsippany-Troy Hills, according to Morris County officials. The three victims, two women and a man all from Morris County, were killed in the crash.
The victims have not yet been identified.
Ground footage from the scene in the express lanes near mile marker 45 showed multiple vehicles completely destroyed; at least one appeared to have sustained fire damage.
The driver who caused the crash was taken to the hospital and police are looking into the possibility the man was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to a law enforcement source.
It took more than six hours for the lanes to reopen after the accident, causing bumper-to-bumper traffic ahead of the morning rush. Several vehicles were towed from the scene.
State police confirmed the three deaths, but didn't released any details about what happened, nor have they shared any information about the victims. It wasn't clear if there were other people in the smashed vehicles who may have survived.
