Subway Delays, Service Changes Following Smoke at Station

A smoke condition disrupted subway service for Lower East Side commuters Friday morning, though the FDNY quickly cleared the scene.

There were service changes and delays in F and M train service for about an hour Friday while the FDNY investigated the source of smoke at the 2nd Avenue station. The MTA later cited a debris fire as the cause of the smoke.

NYC Transit said the FDNY had cleared the scene and service was being restored as of about 9:45 a.m.

Pictures and video on social media showed large crowds of people leaving subway stations along that line, and some smoke rising to street level.
