NY School Board Fires Lawyer After Expletive-Laced Tirade Caught on Video

After the school board's lawyer was captured cursing at parents, he was fired in a meeting Monday

The East Ramapo School District fired its lawyer Monday night after a video captured his verbal tirade against two parents in a parking lot last week. Brynn Gingras reports.

A New York school district fired its lawyer Monday night after his verbal tirade against two parents in a parking lot last week was caught on video.

The attorney, Chris Kirby, was seen in the video calling one woman fat and using a derogatory word against her after a heated East Ramapo school board meeting last Tuesday. Members and representatives of the board, including Kirby, had gotten into a contentious discussion with parents regarding program cuts and budgeting in the Rockland County district.

During the meeting, Kirby snickered when Peggy Hutton spoke and told her to shut up, video shows.

The two continued to argue in the parking lot after the meeting; that's when Kirby uttered the expletives.

"I am 53 years old, and no man has ever said that to me before," said Hutton.

After the video was posted on The Journal News website, hundreds of parents rallied before a closed-door board meeting Monday, demanding Kirby be fired.

The school board agreed to terminate him.

"I feel it was the only step to take and the proper step to take," said Yehuda Weissmandl, East Ramapo school board president.

The board will seek new counsel with a different law firm.

Hutton said she was still frustrated that she did not get an apology.

"I guess I shouldn't hold my breath to hear an apology from Mr. Kirby because he's not man enough for the job," said Hutton.

Kirby was not commenting on the matter Monday.
