A car burst into flames in the Meatpacking District, sending flames near the crowded sidewalks.
Firefighters were alerted to the fire in front of the Gansevoort Hotel shortly after 4 p.m., officials said. There were no reported injuries.
Video posted to social media showed some pedestrians hustling to get away from the fire. Others stood in the street and took photos and video with their phones.
The flames were extinguished and the burned-out shell of a car remained on the side of the Ninth Avenue just south of 13th Street. The driver declined to talk to NBC 4 New York.
