Non-Profit Worker Accused of Stealing Identities of Brain Injury Victims

Manager at the Head Injury Association used victims' social security numbers to file false tax returns, according to the district attorney

Authorities say a former manager at a nonprofit Long Island health agency stole the IDs of more than 50 brain injury patients to get their tax refunds.

Benjamin Achampong is facing an indictment in Suffolk County. He allegedly used the victims' Social Security numbers and other ID to file false tax returns.The Head Injury Association says he hasn't worked there since 2006. It is cooperating with investigators.

Achampong  is accused of collecting more than $20,000 in New York state tax refunds. He also allegedly collected refunds in New Jersey and from the IRS.

He is being held on $50,000 bail in the Suffolk County Jail.

District Attorney Thomas Spota scheduled a press conference Monday in Hauppauge to discuss the case.

The defendant's attorney did not immediately comment.
