Authorities on Long Island are investigating a fatal fire that broke out in what they say was an illegal apartment Friday morning -- leaving one person dead and one injured.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Section detectives are investigating the fatal fire that occurred in a North Patchogue home.

Police say that officers responded to the home on Ohls Street around 9:45 a.m. after a 911 caller reported a fire at the location.

According to police, Elisa Doughty, 65, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter, 34-year-old Kristle Doughty was hospitalized with burns to her arm.

Both mother and daughter lived at the location of the fire.

Suffolk County police say the basement apartment where the woman died was an illegal apartment with no permits.

Police say the fire appears to be accidental and non-criminal in nature. They say it could possibly be linked to cigarettes or someone cooking in the basement.
