Amber Alert Canceled: Baby Kidnapped by Father in NYC Is Returned Safe

NBC Universal, Inc.

Authorities have canceled a New York state Amber Alert for a baby who was taken by her biological father without permission in Manhattan early Monday.

The NYPD says 9-month-old Mi Angel Gaines has been found safe after the amber alert was activated around 12:30 p.m. Monday, nearly 10 hours after the child was thought to have been kidnapped on Eighth Avenue in Harlem. The child was turned into the FDNY in Harlem and was being evaluated at the hospital, police said.

It's unclear who brought her to authorities or if there are any arrests.

The toddler's father, identified as Antonio Armstrong, allegedly took the girl without permission but no details on any custody relationship were immediately clear. It's also unclear whether he has been taken into police custody.

Police initially said the baby was taken under circumstances that lead police to believe she is in imminent danger of serious harm or death. Armstrong has a microphone tattoo on his neck and was last seen traveling on Eighth Avenue, according to officials.

Anyone with information was asked to call the NYPD's 32nd Precinct at 212-690-6315 or dial 911.
