Abandoned, Chained Dog Rescued from Long Island Backyard

An SPCA crew rescued an abandoned pit bull that was left chained in the backyard of a residence on Long Island, authorities said Tuesday.

The owner of the 4-year-old dog had left for El Salvador with no plans to return, the Suffolk County SPCA said.

The dog, tangled in a heavy chain and left without food or water behind a house in Brentwood, was taken to the Grady Animal Hospital for treatment of a leg wound.

"We are appalled that anyone would leave an innocent animal behind," said Ray Gross, chief of the Suffolk County SPCA. "The dog would ultimately starve to death.'

The pit bull "has a sweet disposition" and will soon be available for adopting, he said.
