The Chelsea Market has a new owner after the $2.4 billion purchase was finalized.

Google Inc. bought the renowned New York City brick building.

The management company Jamestown Properties announced the sale of the former Nabisco factory on Tuesday.

The building is directly opposite Google's New York City headquarters in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood.

Google has about 7,000 employees in New York, the most of any location outside of its Silicon Valley headquarters.

Google vice president for real estate David Radcliffe says the Chelsea Market purchase "further solidifies" the company's commitment to New York.

Google and Jamestown say they'll work together to ensure a smooth transition with minimal impact to tenants.

The building's office tenants include Major League Baseball and the Food Network.

With Google's purchase of the building, the two companies have agreed to work together to ensure a smooth transition with little or no impact to the community and tenants of the building. With this goal in mind, Jamestown will continue to manage the retail and food hall.

Visited by more than 500,000 locals and tourists per month, Chelsea Market is widely credited with launching the transformation of West Chelsea and viewed as a major factor fueling New York City's "foodie" craze. The former Nabisco factory occupies the full block bound by Ninth and Tenth Avenues between 15th and 16th streets.
