A woman who police say had the right-of-way as she crossed a Manhattan street Friday morning was struck and killed by an Access-A-Ride van.
Investigators say the 88-year-old woman had been crossing the street in Chinatown around 11 a.m. when the driver of the van ran her down. The collision happened at the intersection of Canal and Allen streets.
The woman, not yet identified, was rushed by EMS personnel to Bellevue Hospital where she died.
Law enforcement sources said the driver, who stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, is expected to face charges of failing to exercise due care and failure to yield.
The Access-A-Ride vans are owned by the MTA but operated by contract employees, the NYC Transit president said during a media briefing. He said the agency would cooperate with the police investigation.
