The producers of five popular Broadway productions have slashed prices in order to entice theater-goers amid growing coronavirus concerns in the tri-state area — and the concerns were warranted because an usher was tested positive a day following the announcement.
The producers of "To Kill a Mockingbird," "West Side Story," "The Lehman Trilogy," "Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?," and "The Book of Mormon," in an unprecedented move announced Tuesday that all remaining tickets to the performances of these shows from Thursday through March 29 will be offered for $50.
By Wednesday, Shubert and Nederlander organizations said that an employee who worked at the Shubert's Booth Theatre, where "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" is performed, was tested positive for COVID-19. That theater and the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, where the usher also worked, was deep cleaned and performances are expected to continue as planned.
"We are exercising necessary due caution with all our employees and the public. Employees of the theaters and productions who may have been exposed were notified and advised to monitor their health diligently and follow best practices related to personal hygiene, as well as directed to stay at home if they are ill," the organizations said in a statement.
If any theatergoers who already purchased tickets to "Virginia Wolf" at Booth Theatre or "SIX" at Brooks Atkinson want to attend another performance at a later date, the company is allowing the switch.
And they say in showbiz, "The show must go on." The specially priced $50 tickets will go on sale beginning Thursday at 12 p.m.

“As long as New York City is open for business, its beating heart remains the Broadway stage. This is an unprecedented opportunity for everyone to see a show that they otherwise might not have had easy and affordable access to," producer Scott Rudin said in a statement on Tuesday.
"I can’t pretend that great theater is the panacea we’ve been waiting for, but in the meantime I think we could all use a few hours away from the evening news,” Rudin's statement went on to say.
